Great
coffee doesn’t just happen. It’s a process, beginning with the farmers
who grow it, and continuing on from there. But it’s the farmer who is
the real key to the greatness of this exceptional coffee from
Colombia’s famed Bucaramanga region. Our Colombia Reserva Especial from
the historic Mesa de los Santos Estate is harvested from heirloom
varietal Bourbon plants, originally planted on the estate by Telmo J.
Diaz (1840-1932). Don Telmo founded the Mesa de los Santos estate,
where he pioneered organic farming methods. Following the tradition of
four generations of coffee-growers, this 100% shade-grown coffee is
sustainably grown, Bird FriendlyTM and Rainforest Alliance CertifiedTM.
The
attention to detail and the care that goes into producing this
outstanding coffee, coupled with the region’s near-perfect climate and
ideal growing conditions, produces a coffee of exceptional quality.
Our
small-batch, artisanal approach to roasting brings out delicate notes
of roasted nuts, cinnamon and a hint of chocolate, producing a smooth,
fragrant, full-flavored cup that sweetens as it cools.

High-altitude, Costa Rican coffees – such as our Costa Rica La Amistad
– set the standard for Central American coffees. Characterized by a
bright, vibrant acidity, delicate floral and fruit notes, and a sweet,
toasty balance, La Amistad is an ideal coffee for your morning cup, or one that can carry you through the day.
Located
adjacent to La Amistad International Park in the lush mountains on the
border of Costa Rica and Panama, La Amistad Estate is divided into
small areas for coffee growing and organic agriculture, with 95% of the
land dedicated to conservation and ecotourism. In fact, La Amistad
Estate is one of the largest private nature reserves in Central
America. Coffee plots are interspersed among large patches of forest,
rivers, springs and waterfalls.
La
Amistad Estate processes and packages only coffee produced on its own
organic plots or on land donated by the founders of the estate to an
association of family farmers who adhere to sustainable agriculture
practices used to produce this exceptional shade-grown coffee.

Flowing north for more than 300 miles – from the swamps of south central Florida to the Atlantic Ocean at Mayport – the St. Johns River is the crown jewel of Northeast Florida, and indeed one of America’s great natural treasures. It provides critical habitat for hundreds of species of birds, fish, shellfish, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, as well as boundless recreational opportunities for Floridians and visitors to the state.
But the St. Johns is also a river in peril, as unbridled development continues to put growing pressure on the state’s natural and water resources, impacting the health of the river and threatening it's future. St. Johns Riverkeeper is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization and full-time advocate and “watchdog” for the river, committed to protecting the St. Johns and improving water quality in the river and its tributaries, as well as protecting critical habitat in the St.
Johns River watershed.
Our Riverkeeper Roast – the first of our Coffees for a Cause – is a blend of 100% sustainably grown, Rainforest Alliance Certified™ Central American coffee, dark roasted to bring out the natural sweetness of the high-altitude Arabica beans.
Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farmers demonstrate how a commitment to conservation and responsible land management can help preserve this fragile environment. Certification also guarantees that farm workers are paid fair wages, enjoy good living conditions and have access to education and health care. And, as part of Bold Bean’s Coffees for a Cause initiative, 10% of proceeds from the sale of our Riverkeeper Roast goes directly to St. Johns Riverkeeper.

Their efforts and those of other Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farmers demonstrate how a commitment to conservation and responsible land management can help preserve this fragile environment. This naturally processed, Fair Trade Certified™ Yirgacheffe coffee from the Ethiopian farming community of Harfusa reveals delicate jasmine and blueberry notes, berry-filled brightness, and a kiss of citrus, with hints of bittersweet chocolate and cardamom.
Family farmers in Harfusa, as well as in other tiny communities in Southern Ethiopia’s mountain forests surrounding Yirgacheffe town, produce this ancient varietal coffee in their backyard gardens, planting a few trees among their food crops. This traditional varietal coffee known only as “Yirgacheffe,” has been passed from farmer to farmer for hundreds of years. Yirgacheffe coffee is unique to the region and, since each farmer plants a crop with his own seed, coffee from each community has over generations developed different charcteristics. Harfusa is among the best.
Fair Trade certification ensures that the farmers are paid fairly and that profits from their harvests are invested back into their own communities to build and support schools, clinics and other projects that increase standards of living and ensure a brighter future for farm families.
