Nicaragua Finca El Recreo - Direct Trade
Located in the mountains of Jinotega Nicaragua, El Recreo Estate benefits from a micro-climate optimal for coffee growth. Meticulous growing, harvesting and processing practices result in a sweet and clean coffee. Careful roasting brings out notes of cocoa and tropical fruit. The final cup is balanced, sweet and approachable. Just like the people who dedicate their lives to producing it.
El Recreo has been owned by the Ferrey-Machado family since 1972 and is the pride of owners Don Carlos Ferrey and his wife Doña Leana. Coffee production halted and the farm became overgrown during the decade-long civil war. But with the use of sustainable growing practices the Ferrey family built the farm back up to full production.
Aside from growing outstanding coffee, the Ferrey family dedicates themselves to the advancement of Nicaraguan coffee producers as a whole. El Recreo operates two technical schools available to any Nicaraguan coffee farmer, one on the farm and one in Jinotega the closest major town. The schools also give the farmers the skills needed to determine the quality of their crop and receive a fair price for their coffee. With the help of the Ferrey family more coffee farmers in the surrounding area now receive fair prices for the coffee they grow. El Recreo also provides housing for 20 permanent farm families along with a school for their children and a full-time clinic on the farm. Rainforest Alliance Certification mandates the use of sustainable agricultural practices and responsible labor practices.
