Finca Twi'Ha is owned by Armando Gomez. The farm was originally owned by Armando's grandfather, Eusebio Gomez. Armando has been working on the farm since he was 23 years old and in 2011 he was able to purchase it from his uncles. Today, Armando and his family (wife, 2 sons and 2 daughters) take care of the two hectare farm. The whole family is involved with all aspect of the production from planting to processing.
The farm is planted in pure Arabica varietals and well managed shade and fruit trees. When we visited with the Gomez family earlier this year their dedication to quality production was very apparent. In the past year Armando has built a coffee drying patio, so he can dry his coffee on a clean surface instead of the dirt. He has also been able to recently expand the farm and build a handful of raised drying beds to improve his drying methods even more. The mill on their property is clean and Armando is focused on expanding the farm and continuing to plant non-hybridized coffee varietals.
The future generation of Finca Twi'Ha is excited about the prospect of continuing the family tradition of coffee growing. Armando's son, Mauricio, is the farm manger and he also studies agronomy at the university in Huehuetenango.
You'll see the coffee resulting from all of this effort is really beautiful. We love the citrusy and vanilla like aromas of magnolia blossom in this coffee. The cup is sweet like honey and sugarcane, with an orange zest acidity and a residual taste of a hand spun chocolate malt.
It looks like the future will be bright for the Gomez family and Finca Twi'Ha. We are excited to be working with this family who should be a real inspiration for the whole Speciality Coffee industry.
